Background to the Summer School on Development 2007
The 2nd Summer School on Development is organised by Unidea – UniCredit Foundation, the University of Florence and the European Development Network (EUDN). Unidea – UniCredit Foundationand the Department of Economics of the University of Florence will host between 1 and 6 July 2007 the second Summer School on Development. The activities of the School are guided by an Advisory Board that comprises Professor Giovanni Andrea Cornia (University of Florence, convener of the Summer School), Professor Patrick Guillaumont (CERDI, University of Clermont Ferrand), Dr. Thandika Mkandawire (UNRISD, Geneva), Professor Jean Philippe Platteau (University of Namur and President of the European Development Network, EUDN), and Professor Frances Stewart (University of Oxford).
Unidea – UniCredit Foundation (http://www.unicreditfoundation.org) is a private non profit foundation set up in 2003 by UniCredit Group in order to promote international cooperation and solidarity in the field of education, health and local development. The Foundation supports projects in the field of rural development, public health, professional training, microcredit, and social integration of marginal youth groups mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe and Italy. The Foundation also organizes training programmes, conferences on social issues and development education activities.
The Department of Economics of the University of Florence (http://www.dse.unifi.it/sviluppo) offers a complete curriculum in development economics, including a three year B.A. on International Cooperation and Economic Development, a two year M.Sc. in Advanced Development Economics and a Ph.D. in the Politics and Economics of Developing Countries.
The Summer School is carried out under the auspices of EUDN. The European Development Network (http://www.eudnet.net/activities.html) is an European network of economists aiming at strengthening the links between researchers working on development issues in Europe, at generating new knowledge, and promoting exchanges of ideas between academics and public authorities so as to increase the impact of research on policy making. Its main activities include an Annual Conference, an annual two-day Scientific Meeting, ad hoc international conferences on development issues organized by its members and Annual Ph.D. workshops.
Organisation and financing of the Summer School on Development 2007
The Summer School on Development 2007 offers an opportunity to gain exposure to state of the art training to a select group of 20 young women and men with specific research/policy experience and interest in the field of income and wealth distribution and other aspects of inequality. The Summer School on Development lasts five days and will be held in English. No tuition fee is levied on the students selected, and all travel and lodging costs are covered by Unidea – UniCredit Foundation.
