Unidea has published the speech given by Marc Augé at the convention “Tra i confini. Città, luoghi, integrazione” (Between the Confines. Cities, places, integration) held in Milan in May 2006. In his work, Marc Augé proposes reflection on the plural city, on the cohabitation of different cultures, with particular reference to the suburbs, seen as generators of marginalisation and, at the same time, of inclusion.
"In this short work," Augé explains, "I wish to deal with three key questions. The first is world urbanisation, in my opinion a fundamental aspect of what is commonly called internationalisation or globalisation. The second regards the fact that the images and messages that constantly surround us really do generate blindness on our part, above all as regards the phenomenon of urbanisation: we see too many things, and in the end it is as if we no longer see anything. Lastly, I would like to consider the idea of mobility: an extremely complex notion, in as much as not everything moves in the urban environment, but at the same time many things do move. Perhaps it is exactly this type of mobility that we have to think about, if we want to avoid being subjected to it in a non-critical way" |
