Fondo Gianesini Emma

UniCredit Foundation, in partnership with the University of Verona, has launched the Fondo Gianesini Emma call to fund three research grants for medical specialists and PhD students, enabling an advanced research experience abroad in the medical field.

This beautiful story begins in 2013 with a donation from Mrs. Emma Gianesini, a philanthropist from Verona who passed away in 2021.

Driven by a passion for scientific research and a strong desire to support young students at the University of Verona, Emma Gianesini, through her generosity made the creation of this fund possible. The fund will continue to operate for many years to come, enabling deserving talents to pursue specialisation abroad.

With the support of UniCredit Foundation, the annual Gianesini Emma Competition Call will take place for the 12th edition in 2025. The initiative, promoted by the Rector of the University of Verona, Pier Francesco Nocini, provides for the awarding of three research grants of €60,000 each. These grants are intended to support advanced medical research abroad, carried out by specialist doctors and PhD students. The programme is coordinated by professors from the University’s Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

In 2024, grants were awarded to the following projects:

  • Alberto Verlato, PhD in Clinical and Experimental Biomedical Sciences – “Spatial profiling of gastric cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis to address cancer spread and improve precision immuno-oncology”

  • Samuele Cesaro, PhD in Biomolecular Medicine – “Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency: the role of metabolite accumulation and the basis for enzyme replacement therapy”

  • Khulah Sadia, PhD in Biomolecular Medicine – “Multi-omics approach to decipher epigenetic mechanisms in liver cancer”.
