The "Chess in Schools Programme - Moldova Region", chosen by UniCredit Foundation through the UCF Edu-Fund Platform in 2024, aims to introduce chess as an educational tool in as many schools as possible, helping students develop essential skills and spend quality time in school. Chess can also offer new opportunities in life, helping to reduce school dropout rates and foster a love for learning.
The programme targets vulnerable students aged 11 to 19 who are at risk of dropping out of school due to difficult living conditions. These students often struggle academically and need engaging educational tools to keep them motivated.
Implemented in the Moldova region of Romania, the programme operates in counties such as Suceava, Botosani, Iași, Neamt, Vaslui, Bacău, Vrancea, and Galati. This region faces high dropout rates and economic challenges, making educational interventions crucial.
The programme involves a team-based approach with macro-level coordination and local micro-teams. Teachers receive training in chess, marketing, and management to implement the programme effectively. Activities include learning through play, fostering skills like collaboration, leadership, and respect. The initiative leverages the experience of a dedicated implementation team and showcases successful examples of students who have excelled through chess. The programme's ultimate goal is to make chess a sustainable educational tool, improving academic performance and social integration for students in disadvantaged areas.
