Libera is one of Italy’s leading civil society networks dedicated to promoting legality, social justice and active citizenship. Through educational programmes and community-based initiatives, it supports young people, educators and local communities in addressing educational poverty, helping strengthen democratic values and create new opportunities for those growing up in vulnerable contexts.

Libera delivers civic education and training programmes for students, young people, teachers and educators, fostering active participation, social and civic competences, and a strong sense of citizenship. Education lies at the heart of its mission and serves as a key tool to address educational poverty, prevent the influence of organised crime and strengthen democratic values. Through initiatives implemented in schools and local communities, Libera supports the growth of informed and responsible citizens, promoting autonomy, critical thinking and civic engagement, with a particular focus on young people living in vulnerable contexts.

Libera also promotes the social reuse of assets confiscated from criminal organisations and supports the families of innocent victims of organised crime, transforming these actions into opportunities for educational growth, inclusion and community development. Through this work, it helps strengthen social cohesion, create positive pathways for young people and foster sustainable development in local communities.

The IMAGINE programme supports students aged 11 to 19 who are at risk of early school leaving, alongside teachers and wider learning communities, in areas affected by educational poverty and social marginalisation. Through an inclusive and multidimensional approach, the programme aims to strengthen participation, expand learning opportunities and build young people’s resilience, helping create more equitable and sustainable pathways for growth and development.

IMAGINE is implemented in Italy, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Bulgaria.

Through a multidimensional, community-based approach, IMAGINE combines formal and non-formal learning opportunities while promoting the active engagement of schools, families and local stakeholders. The programme integrates participatory needs assessment, tailored educational pathways and the strengthening of local networks to address the specific educational challenges faced by each community.

Activities include training for teachers and educators, experiential learning workshops for students, and active citizenship initiatives, helping create more inclusive, engaging and supportive learning environments where every young person can develop their potential.

Through this model, IMAGINE contributes to the development of local educational ecosystems that can sustainably support the growth of future generations, expand learning opportunities and foster more inclusive and sustainable life pathways.
