The School of Public Life is a Hungarian community-based educational and research centre advancing democracy, social justice, and civic participation through critical pedagogy.

Since 2014, it has empowered people from diverse backgrounds to recognise and dismantle systemic inequalities, supporting grassroots activism and collective action. Its training and research programmes attract participants from across Hungary, fostering inclusive spaces where lived experience and advocacy skills come together to create positive social change.

Rooted in the principles of critical pedagogy, the School of Public Life provides educational opportunities for those experiencing oppression and for allies working towards a fairer society.

Through workshops, training, and research, it equips communities with self-organisation and advocacy skills, while uniting grassroots organisations working with disadvantaged children, youth, and adults.

The organisation collaborates with local initiatives and alternative education programmes to promote socially engaged, equality-driven teaching methods that challenge the reproduction of inequalities within the Hungarian education system.

The “Enhancing Educational Opportunities through Critical Pedagogy” project addresses early school leaving among socio-economically disadvantaged students by equipping teachers and youth workers with socio-culturally responsive methods.

Partnering with three grassroots initiatives - Deviszont Community Space, Pirosfecske Collective, and Gólya Youth Club - the programme develops professional training and peer-learning opportunities, adapts approaches to afterschool settings, and compiles best practices into a practical toolkit.

This resource will be shared nationally to help schools and educators create supportive learning environments that reflect students’ backgrounds and foster motivation, thereby reducing dropout and promoting equitable education.
