Ela is a bright twelve-year-old girl living in a small settlement in Slovakia. Her family has very little, but they have always taught her one powerful truth: every person is equal, no matter their background.

Her mother sews and repairs clothes at home so the family can meet basic needs. Her father takes odd jobs, but because they are Roma, finding stable work is almost impossible. Despite these challenges, Ela walks to school every day, carrying a dream of a world without prejudice.

When Ela learned about an essay competition titled “How I Would Change the World”, she knew exactly what to write: ending racism and giving everyone the same chances. Her classmates doubted her. At home, Ela saw her mother’s exhaustion and wondered if trying was even worth it.

But Ela didn’t give up. Two weeks later, she held a diploma for the best essay in her hands. She had done it! That moment changed everything. Even the classmates who once mocked her stood up for her when someone laughed. Ela had earned their respect.

Ela’s story is a powerful reminder: children from disadvantaged backgrounds need opportunities to succeed. They need to feel that their voice matters. When we set aside prejudice and give them a chance, they can achieve incredible things.

That’s why UniCredit Foundation supports the "Zebra Program", developed by Cesta Von in Slovakia. This initiative helps vulnerable young people from impoverished Roma communities overcome poverty through mentoring, life skills training, and better access to the job market. Together, we are building a future where every child can dream and achieve.
