“I come from Serbia originally and moved to Austria when I was 13”

For many young people with a migration background, education is not just a path - it is a responsibility, a promise, and often a source of pressure. Behind this sentence lies a story shared by countless students across Europe: families who moved in search of better opportunities, often sacrificing their own ambitions so that the next generation could thrive.

Parents with a migration background often prioritize work, stability, and building a new life in a different country. And precisely because of what they lacked, they placed education at the center of their child’s future, encouraging them to go as far as possible.

For their children, this can translate into a strong drive to succeed, but also into expectations that are not always easy to carry.

There is often an unspoken, subconscious pressure placed on young people to prove themselves in a society that is still, in many ways, new to them. While this can be a powerful source of motivation, it can also create emotional and psychological weight. Students find themselves navigating not only academic challenges, but also identity, belonging, and the expectations of those who sacrificed so much for them.

Recognizing this reality is the first step toward meaningful support. That is why targeted initiatives are so important. Programmes like Re-Power Your Future were designed precisely to address these challenges, offering students tools not only for academic success, but for personal resilience and wellbeing.

Through dedicated workshops - such as the “Succeed” workshops developed with experts experienced in working with students - young people are given a safe and structured space to reflect, share, and grow. These sessions go beyond traditional education. They help participants understand and manage stress, build confidence, and develop the mindset needed to face complex life transitions.

At the core of these initiatives is a simple yet powerful message: there is a way forward. Even when the path feels uncertain, even when family history does not provide a roadmap, even when the pressure feels overwhelming, support exists.

Students are encouraged to see their background not as a limitation, but as a source of strength. Their experiences, languages, cultures, and perspectives are assets that can enrich both their personal journey and the society they are part of.

Perhaps most importantly, these programmes reaffirm that pursuing an educational path is possible, even if previous generations did not have that opportunity. They help bridge the gap between aspiration and achievement, between potential and confidence.

Because integration is not only about adapting to a new environment. It is about feeling empowered within it and being supported in turning expectations into opportunities.
